Led by former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich legend Xabi Alonso, Bayer 04 Leverkusen is one of the hardest teams to defeat in the 2023/2024 football season. In fact, the Alonso-led Bayer 04 Leverkusen are the only remaining team in Europe’s Top Five leagues that still boast an unbeaten record in their league campaign. In last night’s game against VfB Stuttgart at MHPArena, Bayer 04 Leverkusen went 1-0 down in the first half, but managed to level things up in the following period, allowing them to keep their invincible run in 2023/2024 for another game.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen Came From Behind to Draw VfB Stuttgart
Alonso’s men made an away trip to face VfB Stuttgart at the latter’s home, having won 19 and drawn only twice of their previous 21 matches in all competitions. Nevertheless, just like the previous league encounter against Borussia Dortmund last weekend, it was the opponents who took the lead against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Chris Führich was the goal scorer for the home team in this match. The 25-year-old German international capitalised on the visitors’ poor defensive showing, when Deniz Undav unleashed a beautiful through ball into the penalty box to Josha Vagnoman. The right-back found the unmarked Führich for an easy tap in to give Stuttgart the first lead of the game. The goal was his third in 14 appearances in all competitions for VfB Stuttgart in the 2023/2024 Season.
Down by 1-0 on enemy territory, Alonso’s team talk worked its magic in the second half, and they needed no time to level things up after the first whistle of it. Former Arsenal player Granit Xhaka’s pass allowed Victor Boniface to have a terrific run into the dangerous zone, followed by the Nigerian striker’s first-time cross that was met by 20-year-old Florian Wirtz. The young winger continued to show why he is currently one of the best talents in world club football, and netted his seventh goal in 21 appearances for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The 1-1 game gave Bayer 04 Leverkusen their second straight draw in the league with the same score line.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2023/2024: 19 Wins and Three Draws in 22 Games
With their draw against VfB Stuttgart, Bayer 04 Leverkusen stretched their lead at the summit of German Bundesliga 1 over 33-time German champions Bayern Munich, who suffered a shocking 5-1 defeat in the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt. After their first league loss in 13 games, the Bavarians currently trail Bayer 04 Leverkusen by four points, but Thomas Tuchel’s men have another game in hand for them to catch up with the league leaders.
As for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, they have managed to retain their title as the only undefeated team in Europe’s Top Five leagues. Not only the Alonso-led side have yet to succumb to a loss in their league endeavours, they have also won all of their previous domestic cup and European club football competitions, bringing their season record to an impressive 19 wins and three draws in total. Furthermore, the team have scored a whooping figure of 69 goals during the process, that is, an average of 3.14 goals per game.
Alonso’s Bayer 04 Leverkusen will have Molde FK at their home of BayArena for the final UEFA Europa League group fixture in midweek, but since they have qualified for the knockout round of the competition already, it is likely that the home side will be focusing on their following match versus Eintracht Frankfurt during the weekend instead. In other words, Molde FK might be given a chance to break Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak in 2023/2024, should Alonso field his second lineup for the continental cup game.
